CHESS
ASSOCIATION OF QUEENSLAND INC.
www.caq.org.au
Welcome
to the CAQ email newsletter. This newsletter begins with information from
the Bundaberg Weekender. the moves on to information about the 2010 Olympiad
Appeal.
Since
the last CAQ newsletter, CAQ's willing contributers have added another $500 to
the Olympiad appeal, making our state's assistance the largest of any
other state or territory in the ACF.
CAQ
has already raised nearly $2,000 to help with sending Australia's top
players to the Olympiad. The $2,000 is made up of contributions from CAQ
council and willing indiviual and business contributors.
The
newslettter next moves on to the 2010 Qld Championship, which is now in
progress. Games and results are available on the CAQ results webpage. Also
contained in this CAQ email newsletter is information on upcoming CAQ endorsed
events, how to join the CAQ, ACF events and information at the bottom of the
email if you wish to unsubscribe.
Three tournaments
have had their information confirmed:
1) Qld Womens Championship
2) Wendy Terry Memorial
3) Day of Knights Rapid Tournament
Information for both
tournaments can be found in the new tournament additions section.
The Bundaberg
Weekender (August 21/22) is now an ACF Grand Prix class 2 tournament, which
means more ACF GP points are now on offer. It was previously a class 1
tournament.
On the CAQ policy and
by law front, CAQ Council is in the process of re-writing the by-laws, which
should be completed and displayed on the CAQ website by this time next month.
When the by laws are completed and on display, I will add a link in that
newsletter.
Regards,
Garvin Gray

cannot use Central State School for the Tournament.
A new location is being sought and as soon as one is located, the new
venue will be updated on the CAQ home page www.caq.org.au and in the online
tournament flyer..
Please contact the Bundaberg
Chess Club Secretary (Allan Menham) at menhamat@hotmail.com or 0417073094 a few days

OLYMPIAD APPEAL
http://www.acfappeal.aunz.org/
From
the home page:
The biennial Chess
Olympiad is one of the world's biggest sporting events, and the most important
teams event on the world chess calendar.
The 39th Olympiad is being held at Khanty-Mansiysk, 1900 km from Moscow in
western Siberia - it's hard to imagine a more remote venue from Australia!
Australia will be fielding an open and a women's team,
each five players and a team captain, of our best available players.
With experience at the last two or three Olympiads,
our new young stars GM Zong-Yuan Zhao, GM David Smerdon and IM George Xie will
be out to continue our fine record.
Unlike most competing nations, the Australian
teams receive no government support and must pay their own way, a burden
compounded by the distance involved from Australia to Siberia and the
corresponding high air fares. The costs increase with every Olympiad. They
can't do it alone, but depend on the support of the Australian chess community.
We ask you all to reach for the hip pocket, and give
what you can to the ACF Olympiad Appeal. No donation is too large or too small
- all will get the teams that much closer to Khanty-Mansiysk and will be
acknowledged on this site.
All donors of $50 or more to the last Olympiad Appeal
received email bulletins from the players direct from Dresden. A similar
thank-you gesture is anticipated from the players in Khanty-Mansiysk.
Enquiries from organisations interested in
sponsoring the teams are most welcome

2011
Australian Open
Following our very successful hosting of the 2010 Australian Chess
Championships at norths in January this year, we are proud that
the Australian Chess Federation has accepted our bid to host the 2011
Australian Open Chess Championships at the club in January next year.
Hosting these two premier Australian chess championships in successive years is
a giant milestone in norths chess club's illustrious 102
years-old life (the longest of any chess club in New South Wales), and is a
tribute to the hard work of its Committee members and the loyal and generous
support of norths in providing its superlative venue free of
cost.
The 2010 Championship events attracted a couple of hundred entrants from all
over Australia and overseas, including most of Australias strongest players,
resulting in a daily influx of several hundred players and spectators to norths
during the first half of January and a corresponding financial boost to
the leagues club and local businesses.
The 2011 Open will comprise 4 events: an 11 round Open Championship, an 11
round under-1600 rated Minor, a 7 round under-1800 rated Norths Classic, and an
Australian Lightning Championship, and is certain to be another great success.

UNAUTHORISED WITHDRAWAL
POLICY
I
think it is fair to say that one of the biggest banes of organisers and
arbiters alike is when players decide to not show for their final round games
without at least informing the arbiter that they will not be present for the
final round so the arbiter can at least take that player out of the draw.
Not only is this type of behaviour selfish and in poor form, but it is also
against the unauthorised withdrawal policy of the CAQ, which states:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unauthorised Withdrawals:
d)
Withdrawals. Any player who has completed the first round of any tournament
shall not withdraw from that tournament without approval from the organiser or
DOP. A player whose withdrawal has not been approved by the organiser or DOP
will be regarded as an unapproved withdrawer. In such cases one or more of the
following penalties may be applied:-
-
listing as an unapproved withdrawer in CAQ newsletters and/or web site
- and/or suspension from the CAQ
The secretary may request a verbal or written explanation in determining the
appropriate course of action
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Players who do not show for a tournament round without prior explanation can
expect a please explain letter in the mail from the CAQ Council asking why they
failed to show for their tournament game and why one of the above listed
actions should not be taken.
