Rating Groups (minimum ten players per group)

Rating Group A: 1st: $150
Rating Group B: 1st $100
Other Rating Divisions: 1st $80

If more than 40 entries are received,


an extra $100 will be added to places 1 to 5,
plus the following extra place prizes will be awarded.

90 minutes each clock plus 30 seconds per move (Fischer mode)

Players who register and enter on the day, add $10.

Players rated over 2200 on the March 2010 ACF Classical Rating list will receive free entry

Tournament Rules

1. The 2010 Queensland Open will be FIDE, ACF and QJRL rated.
2. All 2009 FIDE Laws of Chess will be enforced.

3. Without the permission of the arbiter, a player is forbidden to have a mobile phone or other electronic means of communication in the playing venue, unless they are completely switched off. If any such device produces a sound, the player shall lose the game.

4. Two half point byes in total are available in first six rounds.
5. There will be no half point byes awarded in the final two rounds
6. March 2010 ACF rating list will be used to determine a players rating.
7. Outright money prizes will be shared.
8. Tie breaks will be used to decide rating group prizes.

All Queensland players must be financial CAQ members - list of financial members here.
Non-members add $10 annual subscription, or join online here.
Non-Queensland residents must be members of a state chess association.

Policy on unauthorised withdrawals

- From the CAQ code of conduct

Any player who has completed the first round of any tournament shall not withdraw from that tournament without approval from the organiser or DOP.

A player whose withdrawal has not been approved by the organiser or DOP will be regarded as an unapproved withdrawer.

In such cases one or more of the following penalties may be applied:-

  1. Listing as an unapproved withdrawer in CAQ newsletters and/or web site

  2. And/or suspension from the CAQ

  • The secretary may request a verbal or written explanation in determining the appropriate course of action.
