CHESS ASSOCIATION OF QUEENSLAND INC
TOURNAMENT BY-LAWS
The following titles shall be awarded by the Association to the highest scoring Qld resident:
Queensland Champion
Queensland Major Champion
Queensland Minor Champion
Queensland Junior Champion
Queensland Cadet Champion
Queensland Women Champion
Queensland Girl Champion
Queensland Disabled Champion
Queensland Veteran Champion
The winner (s) of the following CAQ titles will be declared champion (s)
Queensland Open
ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS FOR CAQ TITLE EVENTS
Queensland Championship
Entrants shall be financial members of the Association
The current Queensland Champion shall have right of entry
The current Queensland Junior Champion shall have right of entry
The current Queensland Major or Minor Champion shall have right of entry
Players are to be rated above 1700 ACF as of the most recent ACF classical rating list update. Players above ACF 1600 will be accepted if a written submission detailing results is accepted by CAQ Council before the closing entry date of the Championship.
Entrants shall nominate not later than the notified closing date.
Should a vacancy occur at the commencement of the event, the vacancy shall be filled by the highest-rated available reserve.
Queensland Major Championship
Entrants shall be financial members of the Association
Entrants shall not be eligible for the Queensland Championship or Minor Championship
Entrants shall nominate not later than the notified closing date
Queensland Minor Championship
Entrants shall be financial members of the Association
Entrants shall not be eligible for the Queensland Championship or Major Championship
Entrants shall nominate not later than the notified closing date
Queensland Junior Championship
Entrants shall be financial members of the Association
On 1st January of the Championship year, entrants shall be under the age of eighteen years, and under the age specified in each age division to be eligible for the following titles:-
Queensland Junior Champion (Under 18)
Queensland Under 16 Champion
Queensland Under 14 Champion
Entrants shall nominate not later than the notified closing date
Queensland Cadet Championship
Entrants shall be financial members of the Association
On 1st January of the Championship year, entrants shall be under the age of twelve years, and under the age specified in each age division to be eligible for the following titles:-
Queensland Cadet Champion (Under 12)
Queensland Under 10 Champion
Queensland Under 8 Champion
Entrants shall nominate not later than the notified closing date
Queensland Women's Championship
Entrants shall be financial members of the Association
Entry is restricted to female members
Entrants shall nominate not later than the notified closing date
Queensland Girls Championship
Entrants shall be financial members of the Association
Entry is restricted to female members
Entrants shall nominate not later than the notified closing date
On 1st January of the Championship year, entrants shall be under the age of eighteen years
Girl Champion titles may be awarded in the same classes as those described in tournaments 14 and 15.
Queensland Disabled Championship
Entrants shall be financial members of the Association
Entry is restricted to members in receipt of a disability pension
Entrants shall nominate not later than the notified closing date.
Queensland Veterans Championship
Entrants shall be financial members of the Association
On 1st January of the Championship year, entrants shall be over the age of fifty years
Entrants shall nominate not later than the notified closing date.
CHAMPIONSHIP FORMATS
Queensland Championship:
Nine round Swiss, or if entries are less than eleven, a round robin.
One of Two Time controls can be used:
40 moves in 90 minutes, followed by 30 minutes, with a 30 second increment from move one till the end of the game
40 moves in 100 minutes, followed by 50 minutes, followed by 15 minutes, with a 30 second increment from move one till the end of the game.
Submitted to FIDE for rating if eligible
Queensland Open
Eight round Swiss, with the number of players being unlimited
Time control: 40 moves in 90 minutes, followed by 30 minutes, with a 30 second increment from move one till end of the game.
Submitted to FIDE for rating if eligible
Queensland Blitz Championship
Eleven ound Swiss, with the number of players being unlimited. If entries are less than 21, a round robin may be used.
Time control: 3 minutes plus 2 seconds per move
Queensland Minor Championship:
Seven-round Swiss tournament, with the number of players being unlimited
Time control: 60 minutes per player plus a 10 second increment per move.
Queensland Junior Championship:
Eight round Swiss tournament, with the number of players being unlimited
Time control: 90 minutes per player plus a 30 second increment per move.
Submitted to FIDE for rating if eligible
Queensland Cadet (Under 12) Championship:
Seven Round Swiss tournament, with the number of players being unlimited
Time control: 60 minutes per player plus a 10 second increment per move.
Queensland Women's Championship:
Seven ound Swiss tournament, with the number of players being unlimited
Time control: 60 minutes per player plus a 10 second increment per move.
Queensland Girls Championship:
Seven Round Swiss tournament, with the number of players being unlimited
Time control: 60 minutes per player plus a 10 second increment per move.
Can be combined with the Queensland Women's Championship if deemed appropriate by the organisers
Queensland Disabled Championship:
Six round Swiss tournament, with the number f players being unlimited
Time control: 60 minutes per player plus a 10 second increment per move.
Can be combined with the Queensland Veterans Championships if deemed appropriate by the organisers
Queensland Veterans Championship:
Six round Swiss tournament, with the number of players being unlimited
Time control: 60 minutes per player plus a 10 second increment per move.
Can be combined with the Queensland Disabled Championships if deemed appropriate by the organisers
VARIATIONS
Council may approve the use of all moves in 30 minutes time controls for the Queensland Under 8 and Under 10 Championship
Tournament organisers may elect to use a round robin format if the tournament logistics are suitable.
ARBITERS
Arbiters should be Association-approved arbiters
TIE BREAKS
In the event of a tie for the title of Qld Champion, Qld Minor Champion or Qld Junior Champion, play-offs will need to be organised.
The tie break method is as follows:
For two players:
Four games at the same time control as used in the event proper.
If still tied, two games at 25 minutes plus 10 seconds per move.
If still tied, a series of two game mini matches at 3 minutes plus 2 seconds per move. The play-off continues until one player is ahead after one of the two game mini matches.
For three or more players:
Double Round Robin at the same time control as used in the event proper. If two or more players are still tied.
Double Round Robin at 25 minutes plus 10 seconds per move. If two or more players are still tied.
If still tied, a series of two game mini matches at 3 minutes plus 2 seconds per move. The play-off continues until one player is ahead after one of the two game mini matches.
In the event of a tie for the title of Qld Blitz Champion, play-offs will be held immediately at the conclusion of the Qld Blitz Championship.

Four game play-off at 3 minutes plus 2 seconds per move.
If still tied, a series of two game mini matches at 3 minutes plus 2 seconds per move. The play-off continues until one player is ahead after one of the two game mini match blitz play-offs.
For three or more players:
Double Round Robin at 3 minutes plus 2 seconds per move. If two or more players are still tied.
A series of two game mini matches at 3 minutes plus 2 seconds per move. The play-off continues until one player is ahead after one of the two game mini match blitz play-offs.
